Which white paint should you choose for walls?

Answer

Match the white to the room's light: north-facing rooms need warm whites with yellow or pink undertones, sun-filled rooms can take cool whites with grey or blue undertones. Test two or three samples on the actual wall and watch them through a full day before deciding.

There is no "best white," only the right white for your light. Whites are never pure — every one carries an undertone of yellow, pink, grey, or blue, and the room's natural light decides whether that undertone reads as warm and inviting or vaguely dirty. Matching white to light is the whole decision.

North-facing rooms: go warm. Light from the north is cool and blue-grey all day, so a cool white turns the room clinical. Choose whites with yellow, red, or beige undertones — the "soft whites" and "creams" on the fan deck. They compensate for what the window withholds.

South-facing rooms: go cool. Warm yellow daylight flatters whites with grey or blue undertones and keeps them from reading as cream or eggshell. The crisp, gallery whites work here because the room supplies the warmth.

East and west rooms change personality by hour. East light is warm in the morning, grey by afternoon; west does the reverse. Pick a balanced neutral white and judge it at the hour you use the room.

Connect whites across rooms. In a sightline that runs through several rooms, whites should share an undertone family or the doorways will look like lighting faults. One white for walls throughout, plus a trim white in the same temperature, is the safe standard.

Sample on the wall, never on the cardboard. Paint two coats of two or three candidates on the actual wall, watch them from morning to evening under lamps and daylight — then decide.

Preview any white on your real wall before buying: repaint the wall digitally with lighting kept true — upload a photo and test a warm and a cool white side by side.
