Which colors make a room look bigger?

Answer

Pale, cool colors with low contrast between walls, trim, and ceiling expand a room most: off-whites, pale blues, soft greens, light greys. The mechanism is continuity — when surfaces blur together the eye reads one unbroken volume. Dark colors shrink a room but add drama where light is generous.

Pale, cool colors with low contrast between surfaces make a room look biggest: off-whites, pale greys, soft blues, and misty greens, all with trim and ceiling in the same family. The mechanism isn't the lightness itself — it's continuity. When wall, trim, and ceiling sit within a shade of each other, the eye stops finding edges and reads one unbroken volume; high contrast between white trim and colored walls does the opposite, dicing the room into strips.

The ceiling is half the trick. Paint it the wall color or a touch lighter, including over the crown if there is one. A bright-white ceiling on a grey wall drops an invisible ceiling a visible foot.

Cool beats warm at equal lightness. Cool tones recede — a pale blue-grey wall reads farther away than a buttery cream of the same depth. That's why "enlarge my room" palettes lean blue-grey while "shrink and cozy" ones lean terracotta.

Where dark colors still work. A dark feature wall behind a bed or sofa doesn't shrink a room so much as dissolve its far end — in low-traffic corners, that depth reads as luxury, not smallness. The combination that fails is dark on every wall of a small room with one window; the combination that succeeds is dark behind the brightest wall.

Finish matters less than people say. Matte everywhere, one sheen level up in bathrooms — gloss reflects light but also reflects every wall flaw, which visually fragments the surface.

See it before committing to gallons: paint your actual walls any color with light kept true — upload the room and compare pale-expansive against dark-cozy on the same photo.
